Red Sky Brewery

The “brewmaster” is my husband Mark Goldsworthy who has a background in winemaking and viticulture, and the appropriate qualification from Elsenburg College. He has worked for some of the leading wine farms in the region – Kanonkop, Backsberg (both as more of a trainee/assistant role) and or the past five years at Edgebaston, for David Finlayson, as farm manager, viticulturist and assistant wine maker. He has been an avid home brewer for a while now and is looking forward to putting his knowledge of large scale “fermenting” into action in the beer game.

Idiom Wine Estate

The true inspiration for the farm’s name was drawn from an unforgettable summer evening back in July 1990. That evening, the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome provided the sublime setting for six thousand lucky people to witness the inaugural and original Three Tenors concert. So special was the operatic singing that night, that when Luciano Pavarotti asked the President of Italy which song he should perform as an encore, the reply was simply “Da Capo!” which in Italian means “From the beginning”. As such, Da Capo was an obvious choice when Alberto Bottega named the vineyard some years later.
Nestling at the foot of majestic granite mountains, the slopes vary in height from 200 to 350 metres above sea level and have aspects which face north, west and south. The 150 hectare property can be seen from far due to the distinctive mountain shape which is known as the Idiom Conical Peak. The soils contain decomposed granite which is relatively shallow and stony in patches with a clay base. The distinctive northern, western and southern aspects create several micro-terroirs, which add character and complexity to the wines. Each cultivar was matched to the optimum vineyard site possible and several clones of each variety were planted. Da Capo vineyards now offers one of the largest selections of Italian varietals in South Africa that reflect the Bottega family’s heritage. The 17 different varietals harvested at the farm at optimal ripeness and then sorted by hand offer a direct comparisons between the famous wines of Bordeaux and the Rhone, Tuscany and Piedmont, but born of Cape terroir.

Waterkloof Wine Estate

After ten years of searching, we believe to have found a unique vineyard site, capable of producing truly fine wines with a real sense of place. It is therefore our aim to grow grapes, which are as healthy, balanced and characterful as our natural circumstances will allow. We believe that this can only be achieved by cultivating on a farm that is truly alive and in tune with its natural environment- from the rocky soil in which the vines grow, right the way through the surrounding eco-system.
We firmly believe that conventional farming methods (such as using chemical pesticides and fertilizers), combined with modern, standardized and overly- interventionist winemaking techniques (such as the use of aromatic yeasts to create a signature aroma profile in a given wine), aid to breakdown both seemingly obvious, and indeed more subtle differences between various vineyards and winegrowing areas. The result over the past 30 years has been an increased homogenization of the character of wines made from one place to another.
Although working with the dynamic and unpredictable forces of nature (as opposed to fighting against them with the use of conventional farming methods), poses its own set of challenges, it is our firm belief that biodynamic farming, allied with minimal intervention winemaking, will best enable us to achieve our goal of producing wines of vitality, which have a truly defining sense of origin. This decision was not based on whim or for the want of following any perceived trend, but was a decision we came to as a result of Paul Boutinot’s experience observing the development of vineyards and wines belonging to other biodynamic producers throughout the world, over a period of decades.
Having achieved Biodiversity Champion status in 2008, which compliments and integrates many of the key principles of biodynamic farming, we then began converting a few hectares of vineyard, which upon seeing the results, quickly increased to the whole farm. Conversion is now complete and in 2012 we began the official certification process.

Crystal pools

The path starts out fairly gently: after a quick walk down to the valley floor it follows the river up the valley. The path is well-marked out, with short red pegs in the ground at regular intervals.
The pools are magnificent!

There are some pretty impressive jumps off the cliffs into the pools. If you are feeling brave, wait for someone else to jump to see where the best launching spots are. Please at no time dive into the pools.

Although contemporary and stylistically diverse, each of the Waterkloof wines carries a strong core of elegance and integrity, and that is exactly what the food is all about – classical cuisine with a modern French twist.

Chef Czarnecki places an emphasis on using only the freshest seasonal ingredients, such as free-range eggs, farm-reared Schapenberg lamb, and a variety of common and rare herbs and vegetables – many of which are grown and sourced right here at Waterkloof.

Stellenbosch Golf Course

Stellenbosch Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2004. This, the 4th oldest Golf Club in South Africa, changed from a 9 hole golf course to the current 18 hole championship lay-out in 1953. This magnificent golf course has hosted some of South Africa’s most prestigious golf tournaments, including the 1999 South African Open and 5 South African Masters tournaments.

Situated at the foot of the majestic Helderberg mountains on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, a town that is also home to one of South Africa’s most revered universities. Stellenbosch Golf Club offers golfers an immaculate golf course, complemented by a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Although in the midst of Stellenbosch town some of the holes are bordered by the characteristic vineyards of the winelands area whilst others surprise the golfer with breath taking vistas of the surrounding mountains and town. Devonvale Golf Course

The magnificent 18-hole Championship golf course needs little introduction, offering a regular challenge to both local and international golfers alike. The original layout, designed by Ken Elkin, who designed many of the Capes better known courses, has seen several improvements over the last 5 years and is constantly undergoing improvements but still remains a true ‘country course’.
Devonvale is fortunate enough to have a large dam in the centre of the course, which feeds the irrigation system, and therefore the golf course doesn’t make use of potable water. About 90% of the water utilised is recycled or harvested and in 2006 Cape Irrigation Systems and Devonvale Golf course won the LIA Environmental Management Water Conservation Trophy for best practice water conservation.
An important aspect of Devonvale’s existence is the hosting of tournaments. The estate has seen the hosting of the SA Ladies Open, Sunshine Tour, Provincial Opens, Interprovincial tournaments, Ernie Els foundations, SA Open Qualifying rounds, Interschools and Senior Opens and looks forward to hosting many more in the future as this forms part of Devonvale’s ethos.

Steenberg Golf Course

Steenberg Golf Estate and private Golf Club is situated in the lush Constantia Valley, just 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town.
The golf course – consistently named one of the best conditioned courses in South Africa Golf Digest’s annual Top 100 – attracts golfers seeking a total golfing experience. Known for its hybrid plan, it offers traditionalists the opportunity to ‘bump and run’ (a rare shot in South Africa) in the rough around the greens, and to meet the challenges of strategically placed sand pits and waterways.
The par-three, not-so-short 14th hole, features the largest green in Africa at 76 meters in length. Indigenous shrubs guard the green and the mound has been shaped to echo the distinctive mountain range behind.
The 18-hole golf course was designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways. Its environmental diversity gives the course its unique character.
The well-designed and refurbished clubhouse has seen many golfers enjoying the 19th hole.

Clovelly Country Club

Used initially by a group of naval officers stationed at the nearby Simonstown base (who were mainly transitory), and a number of enthusiastic golfers from the area, the Clovelly Golf Links was formed, and was for a start, only a nine hole course.
It was several years after the Great Depression of the late 1920’s that Clovelly was rescued from closure by two entrepeneurs Gus Ackerman and Michael Pevsner who purchased the property and in 1932 formed the Clovelly Country Club which was officially opened in 1934.
The property was the farm “Klein Tuin”, and was purchased for the sum of 3 000 pounds. Gus Ackerman and Michael Pevsner’s stated purpose was “that the aforesaid land shall only be used for sporting and other activities of the Clovelly Country Club from the membership of which no person shall be debarred by reason of race, religious denomination or creed”.

Stoney Point Pinguins

Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to one of the largest successful breeding colonies of African Penguin in the world.

Located in the quaint coastal town of Betty’s Bay in the Overberg, the Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to a unique colony of African Penguins. Stony Point offers the public the chance to see these wonderful flightless birds up close, via the boardwalk through the colony, which allows the public to observe the penguins go about their daily activities in their natural habitat, without disturbing or disrupting them.

Also present in the colony are three species of cormorant; the Crowned cormorant, Cape cormorant and Bank cormorant, all of which breed on the outer rocks. There are also Hartlaub’s Gulls and Kelp Gulls which forage in the colony, while the Rock Hyrax, more commonly known as the Dassie, can be seen on the surrounding rocks.

The colony lies on the site of the old Waaygat Whaling Station, which was used to harvest and process whale meat in the early to mid 1900s. Remnants of the machinery and infrastructure for this long-defunct industry can still be found at the site.

Clarence Drive

Clarence Drive is a magnificent scenic coastal drive between the windswept hamlet of Rooi-Els and the naval town of Gordons Bay, which nestles in the north-eastern crook of False Bay in the shadow of the Hottentots Hollands mountains. This beautiful, coastal drive stretches between the two towns over 21 km, hugging the wild turquoise Cape coastline all the way. If you like passes with lots of corners, then this one is for you, as it contains 77 bends, curves and corners of which four are in excess of 150 degrees. The road is in a beautiful condition and attracts tourists, locals, bikers and cyclists in their droves. Overtaking is fairly limited and in general one can expect to average well below 60 kph.

Cape Peninsula Drive

There are most probably only a hand full of scenic routes around the world that can hold a candle to the roads that circle the Cape Peninsula to form the Cape Peninsula Scenic Drive. From the winding M3 route through leafy southern suburbs, the vistas of Boyes drive above Muizenberg, the splendour of Chapman’s Peak between Noordhoek and Hout Bay to the last stretch along the Atlantic Seaboard past Llandudno through Campsbay, Seapoint and then full circle back to the City of Cape Town, this is a true “bucket list sightseeing experience”.

Elgin Market

Genesis

Elgin Railway Market is the brainchild of businessman Roger Orpen, who converted the old apple warehouse into a bustling steampunk station market boasting local vendors, live music and a gateway to the beautiful Overberg town.
Inspired by the barn's railway-side setting, Orpen took his creative cues from the invention of steam and the industrial age, milestones accompanied by the rapid development of rail networks across the world. Creating a beautiful space where art deco meets Victorian, the Market is unlike any other in South Africa.
The next step in Orpen's plan was to bring a steam train to the Market, which he now does a few times a month in partnership with the Ceres Rail Company. The whistle and steam of the arriving train is a must-see for children (and adults) and a bucket list experience for the passengers who sign up to take the ride. Visitors to the market can greet the train on the station platform or view its arrival from the Market's leisure deck overlooking the railway.
